My Students

I have recently developed a Mass Media Communications class for my school. Students will be taking this class for the first time in the fall. Our school does not have much funding for electives, and the choices for elective credits are slim. Students in this district need a greater scope of prospective careers. While many do go to college (mostly nearby), a significant number stay in this rural area to pursue technical careers. Roughly sixty percent of our students in this rural community fall beneath the poverty line.

These young people are diverse in race, background, social class, and interest; they need more options than they are receiving.

The students at our school can take music, theater, and a great number of English-based electives. For anything more hands-on, they are bused to the district's technical center a town over. They are interested in taking career-specific classes, but their options are limited due to the size of our district.

My Project

Aside from yearbook, our school lacks a concrete journalism or marketing class. I have created a year-long survey class that will allow students to gain a basic understanding of advertising, public relations, marketing, social media, and journalism. This course will require students to create business models, advertisements, magazine spreads, newspapers, podcasts, and various other hands-on, real world projects.

In order to create dynamic, professional-looking projects, we need high-quality equipment.

Students will write, design, and shoot their own commercials and documentaries. They can record special events such as chorus concerts to upload to the school website, and they will definitely film news broadcasts. These camcorders come with photo and video editing software, with which students can do almost anything!
