Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as Attention-Deficit, Dyslexia, Social-Emotional, and Autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with social-economic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
Our classroom recently won a grant for digital story-telling and my students will use these resources to document their newfound knowledge of finance. Although my students struggle academically, they are advanced artistically. The way my students learn is non-traditional as they respond well to creative tools to show their proficiency in math as opposed to the traditional paper and pencil method.
I teach across grade levels and have selected resources that would teach money and finance embedded with writing skills.
After my students took a state test, I noticed their deficits in expressing their rationale in a written format of how their answers were formed. Most of my students also struggled to compute money and for some recognizing coins.
To meet the diverse learning needs of all of my students and given that my students enjoy creative writing, I have selected Monopoly Junior Electronic Banking, Monopoly Game: Ultimate Banking Edition, The Game of Life Junior, The Game of Life, Money & Making Change DVD by Rock 'N Learn, Money Activity Station - Gr. 2 and Exploring Economy Hands-On Activities - Complete Set to introduce my students to the world of finance- a lifelong skill. I have also selected Writing Strategies DVD by Rock 'N Learn with two 7.5 Inch Portable DVD Players for students to view videos coupled with Lulu Jr. IlluStory Junior and Final Draft 10 to engage my students in creating a published book on finance as well as a script we will digitally produce about financial literacy.
