The kids I teach are bright, funny, and energetic. They come to school ready to use those qualities and it's up to the teachers to make sure they use them in positive ways to help them grow into productive, successful members of society.
Many of my students live in a state of "not enough"--not enough access to food, clothing, housing, healthcare, experiences outside of their neighborhoods, positive adult role-models, connections to the world around them, the possibility for a brighter future--the list could go on and on.
I want them the have access to everything they need to be successful when they come into my classroom. Unfortunately, our Title I, high-poverty level school cannot always provide these opportunities.
In our English language arts classroom, we spend a lot of time reading and writing. A document camera would allow students to see me (and each other) actively analyzing texts; we could annotate and share thinking while reading and the whole class would be able to see and participate in the experience.
A document camera could also facilitate the writing process and help planning, drafting, revising, and editing come to life for students.
Being able to analyze and discuss a piece of writing together would help students increase their confidence and ability to transfer those skills to their own writing.
I am most excited about having students use the document camera to teach each other and to share their work with the class. Students love to collaborate and to learn from each other. This technology would assist students in highlighting their successes and helping their classmates see exemplars.
