My Students

"All the world is a stage" and my students are the players with entrances and exits and laughing and line forgetting. My students reenact "Casey at the Bat", "Don Quixote", and this year I want to add "Wild Bill's Wild West Show".

Fifth grade students love to put on plays and skits.

They like to produce their own movies and news reports. They attend a Core Knowledge school that is rich in literature, history, and science. They want to learn about everything, but with a modern twist. Being able to make their own movies or record their own skits is such an exciting and fun way to bring the stories to life. History becomes real and they get to be the stars. They will be able to edit and create their own production with their choice of music, photographs and video that they produce with guidance from me, their instructor.

My Project

Fifth graders will become actively engaged in learning. They will become excited in learning about these characters. By using the cameras, they will no longer be just sitting and reading in a book, but they will take what they have read and make it come to life. For struggling readers, this will take the pressure of reading off and allow them to become someone else. They will build their fluency of reading and will be excited to read more the next day knowing that they will be able to be in the movie. The confidence that will grow as they watch themselves turn into literary characters, and the pride that they will have in their finished movie will allow them to succeed in ways they may not have done in the past.

This project is so important because students need the opportunity to learn in many different ways.

If the only way that I expect them to learn is through sitting and reading a book, some students will not be successful. This project will be so helpful in engaging the reluctant learner, and it will help to bring the rich literature that is taught to life.
