My students are unlike most children their age. They are extraordinary. They learn in extraordinary ways. They may all be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but that is not just simply who they are. They are happy. They are engaging. They communicate through various means. They dance. They sing. They tell jokes. They learn through their five senses. That is who my students are. They come from various backgrounds but are united in my classroom to learn through non-traditional means. They walk into school each morning with smiles on their faces, ready for the day ahead.
My Project
Emerging research and practices have shown that using technology-based supports has been effective in targeting the main challenges for individuals with ASD – communication, socialization and motivation. Digital tools have the power to help students with ASD communicate and gain confidence. Technology makes visual images more accessible to the individual with ASD. Computer graphics capture and maintain their attention.
Everybody has a story to tell, the iPad gives students with autism a medium to tell their stories like never before.
My aim is to integrate iPads into instruction, student learning and assessment, and classroom management with a variety of applications (Nearpod, Skitch, and Scene Speak) in multiple content areas/ settings. Furthermore, we will use applications like ChatterPix Kids, Shadow Puppet Edu, Puppet Pals HD and Green Screen by Do Ink to create digital stories and movies!
