I teach Special Education in an urban, public, middle school. My students face plenty of challenges and have been working hard to overcome hard situations their entire childhoods. The school is the most diverse middle school in the city, with students from 15 different countries. My self-contained classroom is even more diverse, with students representing a wide range of ability levels and disability types.

Despite no smart board, TV, or projector, I try to incorporate technology in the classroom to engage and interest even the hardest to reach students. One day as I had the 7 students gather around the computer for a presentation of a reading curriculum rap song about solving conflict, a 6th grade student commented, "You always have something new for us to do on the computer!" They watched the words closely as they followed the beat and even tried singing along.

I currently have a district-provided laptop to use in my classroom, but no projector to really put it to good use. In reading, I will use the LCD projector to present background information videos from the curriculum's website (PhLitonline.org) to get students excited about the stories we read. I will also use PowerPoint presentations to teach new skills, vocabulary, and information. In math, I will be able to incorporate interactive websites (such as illuminations.nctm.org) to demonstrate new concepts. I will also use PowerPoint (instead of the blackboard) to play review Jeopardy games of math skills. There are also currently used computer programs (such as Achieve3000.com) that I would like to teach the students to use more effectively. A projector would give me the means of teaching.
