Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a humanities teacher at Fannie Lou Hamer High School. Our school has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for ten years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges.
I believe that it is important to teach students to know their hearts and use their minds well. We prepare them to live productive, socially useful, and personally satisfying lives with an academic program that stresses intellectual development and social involvement in our society. I have developed a strong curriculum that places great importance on learning how to learn, reason, question, and investigate.
A guiding principle of my school is public performance. My students perform plays and lead presentations in front of peers and their families. In the past year, we have performed Medea, debated Athens' and Sparta's strengths, and presented storyboards on Greek myths. Unfortunately, we have no visual evidence of these performances. We have no opportunity to capture our performances to share with other classrooms.
I would like one digital video camera to capture the performances. We would use these videos as teaching tools to analyze and build performance skills. I could also use the videos to have tangible models of our projects to show new students each year. The students could also use these videos in applications for college and internships, and for their graduation portfolios.
My students would love the opportunity to make their visions a reality and to share this hard work and imagination with their family and friends. Moreover, their work could make a real impact on their academic opportunities and leave a legacy for future students.
