Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ~25 wonderful, brilliant, empathetic third graders at a school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They are energetic, funny, and curious, and they're ready for a big year of learning!
Our students are returning in-person, many for the first time since March 2020.
This project is one of many efforts that our classroom is making to ensure we are building an intentional community space when we gather together.
My Project
Students are returning in-person to another unpredictable year of school! While they've learned in every space they've been in, we talked a great deal about what they like in spaces where they do their best work. Over and over kids talked about doing work where they feel cozy and at home.
We want to leverage our classroom space to be warm, inviting, and gentle for kids to do their best learning.
An important feature of that is our lighting. We have wonderful windows but not very inviting overhead lighting. We hope to build a meaningful learning community around warm lighting in our classroom this year.
