Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in water? We do! That's why we are going to investigate aquatic habitats. Middle school life science is all about questioning your environment, and exploring the life around you. Since we teach in an inner city charter school, the majority of our students have never even left their neighborhoods. This project is an opportunity to take a look at a different environment than their own.
Our goal is to bring an aquatic habitat to the classroom. We have a brand new facility funded by private donors. Ironically, however, we have no materials budget and our classroom supplies don't come close to matching our fabulous surroundings.
Our overall unit concludes with an expedition to an aquatic environment, but our first phase begins in the classroom. We need aquariums, plants, snails and fish. Usually our population of students only experiences science through textbooks which are inaccessible and boring. This hands on opportunity will engage students and show them that science is relevant and exciting.
Your help will ensure that our students receive an equitable exposure to CA state science standards. Students in affluent communities across the state commonly participate in these projects; you could bring the same opportunity to inner city youth.
