Help me give my students a light table and materials to enhance literacy, math, and writing skills in fun, playful ways. Children are naturally drawn to the gentle glow of light which will help support academic learning.
As a teacher in a low-income school district (56.6% free and reduced lunch), my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My classroom is an Early Childhood Special Education classroom so the majority of my students have a developmental delay in one or more of the following areas: social emotional, communication, adaptive behaviors, physical development, and cognitive development.
These students require differentiated instruction each and every day.
My students are constantly learning and developing in all areas, but need new ways to enhance their learning. They need a variety of materials to draw their attention and increase their focus to learning activities in the classroom.
My Project
These materials will not only draw the students attention to new classroom activities to build academic skills, but also support some of the specific learning needs of my students. I have students who have visual impairments and the light table will help support their learning but also highlight what we are working on. The light table will also add more light to an activity allowing the students to better see the activity and materials.
The light table is a versatile tool that can be used for everything from open-ended play experiences to arts and crafts, to teaching academic concepts, and more!
The light table will bring new sensory activities into the classroom to help the students who learn in different ways and enhance the learning already happening in the classroom.
The math mats and manipulative tubs will help support the students in learning patterning, numbers, shapes, sorting, colors, etc. The magnetic tiles will build an open-ended play experience that allows the students to be creative and build various structures. The light table will be a perfect place for high level thinking, experimenting, and conversing. This will help us build our vocabularies which is one of the major predictors in becoming successful readers in the future. We will be building a richer vocabulary through color mixing, science inquiry, Magna-tile constructing, and more!
