Light It UP for Reading and Math

Help me give my students these hands-on learning materials to enhance reading and math skills!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from mostly low-income families. Our school is an ethnically diverse school and is located on the south side of Chicago. Many of our students speak both English and Spanish. My students enjoy reading poetry, and they know repeated readings help them with fluency.

My students are all very creative, kind, insightful and so very eager to learn!

All of them are third-grade students. They all are diverse learners, and they require additional academic, social, and speech supports. My group of students fills each day with joy and smiles. They are making me laugh as we work together. They are eager to learn and create. They continue to amaze me every day! I am also fortunate enough to also work in a co-taught classroom, where my students are learning with their bilingual peers. This type of classroom is more inclusive, and students are benefiting from having two teachers in one class. It is a win-win for all.

My Project

My students all have sensory integration issues. Many of them have attention deficits as well. These materials will help all students engage more senses when learning.

My students have been taught in a home environment because of the Covid-19 pandemic, now that they are back in person, they require many movement activities to help them stay focused.

Sitting in front of a computer is not the optimal learning environment for anyone. Students with special needs require sensory breaks. They also learn more effectively when moving.

The light mini tables and building equipment will allow them to move while learning. All of these materials also help students calm themselves when feelings of anxiety set in.
