Light It Up For Autism!

My students need visual and reinforcing items due to their significant developmental delays that are caused from Autism. Light table and manipulatives can help teach basic introductory skills to my students.

My Students

I teach students that have severe, non-verbal Autism. This includes severe developmental delays in language, communication, social, academics, fine motor, and behavioral. I teach functional skills, social skills, sensory processing, language development, and academics. All of my students are on a different level in each area, so it is imperative to have access to multiple levels of sensory and functional items.

Student's with Autism are AMAZINGLY bright, especially MINE!

They are extremely happy being left alone and not progressing, because to them, progress is change and change is very hard. My job as their teacher is to push them without pushing the over the edge, while holding their hand for support, while giving them firm boundaries and love all at the same time! To know what each student needs is very difficult at times, due to their lack of communication. Most of my students come to me with only screaming/crying as their mode of communication. This requires me to have major detective skills to determine the who, what, and why of multiple situations everyday, all day long. This takes a lot of organization, detective skills, stamina, and love. I absolutely LOVE my job and my kids!

My Project

I teach student's with severe, non-verbal Autism. These students have sensory processing disorder as part of their disability; therefore, things that light up are very intriguing to them. My student's love light up toys/manipulatives. It is very difficult to find things that are reinforcing than their own autistic world, that they frequently revert to when not engaged. These small light tablets are easy to move and store, therefore they can be used in multiple learning stations for multiple activities. They can be used to teach name, letter, and number recognition, along with simple play that leads to independent play and discovery.
