Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach physics in a design + engineering focused high school in Oakland. Many of my students have been in school together since elementary school, and we have a supportive, tight knit community of students. They love to collaborate and explore together, and I try to build my classroom to reflect that strength.

My students are bright, creative, and innovative, and I need a curriculum to match their learning needs and reflect's our school's focus on engineering and design.

I have created a curriculum where students use physics concepts to build and engineering different products, including earthquake proof structures, rockets, mini cars, and museum exhibits. We practice the scientific process in a way that allows my students to be in charge of their own learning, and this has led to some innovative and creative work from my students.

My Project

Exploring and manipulating the properties of light allows my students to connect their creativity and artistic sides with scientific inquiry and learning. The materials will help my students understand the properties of light, as well as how light is manipulated by technology to achieve certain outcomes. The prisms and lenses will allow students to explore how light changes through different mediums. The colored lenses and different colored light sources allow students to explore how different wave lengths of light can change how they see the world around them. Students will then use what they learned to re-create exhibits from the exploratorium focus on light and optical illusions. After re-creating these exhibits, students will get to show each other their work through a gallery exhibition open to the entire school.
