Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Great writing needs to be read, as sure as light needs to shine. My students' hard work and creativity deserve to be published, shared, and celebrated. As Sylvia Plath said, "Nothing stinks like a pile of unpublished writing."
My students are hard-working, curious, expressive, and truly delightful.
They produce great writing when guided closely and even more amazing work when allowed to trust their own process. Our school is located in the flatlands of a large city in California. More than 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. More than 82% are English Language Learners. 100% of them are amazing, delightful, hungry for learning, and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. And creative we will have to be. The latest budget cuts have left us with a skeletal crew of teachers, and money for only the most basic supplies. My students are always my favorite part of the job. They are fun, kind, intelligent, open-minded and very receptive to learning experiences that teach them how to care for and about each other.
My Project
These materials are to ensure that my students' hard work and creativity are seen and celebrated, not stuck in binder or folder somewhere. The toner in our printer ran out at the end of the last school year, and I need to make sure their work can be printed. The illustrations and photos to be included in their Family History books, stories, and science reports require both ink for the color printer and photo paper upon which to print. The report covers and page protectors will provide ways for students to share their writing with parents, families, Buddies, school staff, and with each other.
Writing is a powerful way to communicate; knowing who your audience is and knowing that they will see and honor your work has big implications for one's experience throughout the writing process.
Seeing their work presented with quality materials brings a sense of honor and respect, which will grow our students' investment in their own development as writers.
