I work at an urban school in the city of Rochester. Our city is one of the most segregated in the nation, and not surprisingly, we have one of the highest rates of child poverty. Our children are amazing though and often thrive against the odds in our expeditionary learning environment.
Our school specializes in helping students study real world issues and we create our own curriculum with social justice themes.
We love to study the world around us using reading, writing, science and social studies all unified in one theme that we focus on for months at a time. Students come alive as they get out of the classroom into the real world, interact with other adults and people, learn through hands on experiences, and create purposeful end products to be shared and for the benefit of others.
My Project
Our fall expedition is titled, "Lift Every Voice." We will explore how children can use their voices in their homes, classrooms and communities to build up themselves and others. We will use standards of citizenship, government, BLM and the presidential election all while keeping it 6 year old friendly! These composition notebooks are challenging for parents to find, but are much more friendly for our special education students and general education 5 and 6 year olds as they have manuscript (dotted) lines and also a place to draw.
We will encourage them to find their voices through writing in this treasured notebook that they will personalize and make their writing home base.
This is especially important as our district is currently utilizing all remote learning, and this will also help families to keep the students writing in one place.
