Help me give my students the opportunity to discover the joy of reading. Introducing my students to various books like Alone: The Girl in the Box by Robert J. Crane grabs their interest and ignites their imaginations.
The students in my class are bright, inquisitive 18 to 21 year olds with learning disabilities who are motivated to improve their reading and writing skills. These students participate in our district's transition to independence program and are working hard to prepare themselves for a successful independent living. One part of reaching their individual life goals is participating in an interactive remedial reading program.
Most of my students say that they struggle with reading comprehension and many have difficulty with reading fluency as well.
Because of this, they are just beginning to experience how much fun and liberating reading can be. Watching as my students freely engage with their learning energizes and inspires me every day.
My Project
My project focuses on increasing literacy by providing novels like Alone and Shelter, to students who are reluctant readers so they can discover the joy of reading and develop an interest in reading for pleasure. The more students engage in reading, the better they will read.
My students are interested in mystery books and fantasy books; however, our program does not have a library and funding is short.
A block of class time is provided each day for "Book Club" where students can be introduced to books that interest them and inspire them to read more. I love seeing my students excited about reading!
