Help me give my students a voice in the world through the lens... of a camera!

I am proud to teach small town rural middle school students in grades 6-8 from all backgrounds with active imaginations. They want to be actively engaged in the learning process! Although these kids' lives have been affected by Covid-19, my kids still WANT to learn, and are coming to school for it! Even though money is scarce in our community, they’ve not let what they don’t have alter what they could have. So I’ve chosen to do the same. I can teach today and prepare them for a better future.
Currently, I teach Picture Perfect Publishing, which covers everything from photography and photo-shop to advertising and creative writing.
Our class motto is we give ideas life. Students must be taught how to use their voices in different ways and given opportunities to do so. If we want to change the world, let’s teach life skills! Life through a lens puts the “HIS/HER” in History.
A camera can be a powerful tool for giving our students a voice in his or her story. Looking at life through a lens can have many positive outcomes...and somebody has to be on the horizon to capture all those memories!
I want to run my class like a mini advertising agency, as well as document school history at the same time. When students look through the lens of a camera, they become directors, actors, photographers, videographers and advertisers! They begin to visualize what can be and start to build on these skills. I want students to learn to use quality cameras as a spring board for career exploration. These Nikon cameras/lenses and other tools will be useful in learning how to become budding photographers and videographers and aid students on their own historical journey in documenting HIS/HERstory in real time. They can use these cameras and lenses to take pictures or shoot live videos. I also want students to learn how to take clear pictures that can be used in their school yearbook, or be photoshopped and sold as part of school fundraising activities, which is also why we wanted a nice distant lens. The book on DSLR photography would also be helpful … because I certainly don’t have all the answers!
Learning to look at the world through photography and videography will open up a whole new world for my students.
Additionally, using a quality microphone will improve sound quality in our life videos. Students may use the mic in videoing school assignments, plays, or announcements which will give them an opportunity to learn oratorical skills, soft interviewing skills, and editing techniques.
Finally fun tools like the reflectors will allow students another opportunity to develop and hone their photography skills . They can play with light and make fun or serious pictures for school, themselves, their advertising assignments, fund-raising, or their photoshopping assignments.
Help me give my students a voice in the world… through the lens!
