With this list, there are many genres provided for student choice which cover many interests and abilities. After reading, students will reflect, explore, develop, and express their thoughts by creating products that encourage self-expression. These projects will benefit our students because they will help them become more comfortable in finding their voices and learning how to express them positively, innovatively, and meaningfully. Forming an opinion about a topic and discussing it enhances learning and memory; learning becomes more authentic and relevant when students are given choices and platforms for creative expression. From chapter books to picture books, there is literally a book choice for every reader. The Math Inspectors series might inspire a student to create a product, video, or song which would motivate their peers to learn a new math skill. A picture book like Rock Paper Scissors, might inspire a student to create a digital retelling of the story giving personality to the characters. Black Cats Get A Bad Rap might inspire students to write poems about generalizations made about other animals. Thinking, Reflecting, Inquiring, Expressing, and Sharing thoughts in a creative way encourages learning. Self-expression is actually the "Writing" component of this lesson. Students will choose their own method for sharing what they read. Showcasing and sharing their work benefits students and prepares them for real-life experiences. Strategies and activities that encourage students to inquire, think, reflect, and discuss help students learn how to use and develop their voice. Creative expression comes alive both in the classroom and out-side of it when students create tangible products and showcase them. They may create reading posters, character diaries, pod-casts, dramatizations, songs, videos, etc. The possibilities are endless! Read it, Write about It...
