This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
We want to make cupcakes! The students in my classroom are high school Juniors and Seniors who need significant supports to finish a high school diploma. Along the way they need to understand how math, reading, writing and chemistry are relevant to them. With teenagers the route can often be eating!
Making cupcakes takes tools!
While cooking in general does take math, measurements and reading for content, baking has to be accurate. If the baking soda and acid aren't measured correctly the cupcakes won't rise. If the dry ingredients are not sifted, or mixed correctly, clumps of baking soda may wind up in teeth, which isn't pleasant. Reading needs to be done correctly because a cookie made with 3/4 a cup of salt rather than 3/4 of a teaspoon is disgusting!
Eight to ten of my students plan on making four batches of cupcakes. We start with using the recipes to create grocery lists. Then we figure out costs, after that we read through the recipes for new words. We use the recipes to decide how to expand them or shrink them.
Having thoroughly explored the recipes, we are ready to go to the kitchen. Having 4 mixers helps complete the projects within the timeframe of the class and cuts down on discussions of who has to clean them. Similarly, measuring cups for each station and mixing bowls and supplies are essential. Of course, these supplies will be used for several projects. Please help us!
