Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I am teaching in an extended resource classroom in Norwalk, Connecticut. It is a a regular middle school, but our classroom is the only one of it's kind. I have many students who have mild to severe disabilities. We work on life skills and the students go out to other classes to be with general education peers at some parts within the day.

Our class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

We want to give our students just as engaging and stimulating a learning experience as the other schools.

My Project

My students benefits from life skills learning. Anything that is hands-on will help them. Knowing how to count money and make purchases will help them. Most of the time they have a snack time in the room, why not use that opportunity to build some of these skills. The goal is to create a school store, where students use earned money (play money) as they complete job tasks around the room. They will be able to purchase goods from the store, but also earn money working in the store. They can also take inventory of the goods and write out receipts based on the specific students' skill level.

The cash register will help students to organize money and sort money a huge skill in most of their plans, and a huge skill in life.

Many of my students still have trouble counting. They will be able to count and organize the items in the Big Healthy snack box and see how many are sold. They will be able to learn how to write a receipt and know what a receipt is with the Receipt book that will be purchased with this project.
