Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We call this lab and project "life skills from Chemistry". Students get to explore how chemistry is applicable to their everyday lives, and maybe even their future employment.

At the end of each year chemistry students get the opportunity to apply a lot of their chemistry skills and knowledge to make different products.

One of the items they learn to make is soap. For the first sample batch, each group of students is assigned a certain composition of oils. This allows every group to test different oils and choose their top favorites. After this step, each group gets the opportunity to create their own recipe and then see it come to life. They get to choose the type of oil and any scents and decor they would like to add. Again, during this process students are using calculations and chemistry concepts. This activity is done by all of our chemistry classes on campus! It's a wonderful opportunity that students look forward to.
