Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher. I teach a Life Skills class, so a lot of what I teach is geared towards real-life skills needed after high school! I aim to make my classroom like a home because I'm teaching my students how to be as independent as possible in life after high school. We do academics too, of course, but with some fun twists and added daily skills in cooking, cleaning, laundry, self-care, budgeting, job skills, turn-taking in games and so many other fun ways! I teach the most amazing kids. They are my best friends. With teaching all of this fun stuff in a low-income district, all our supplies are purchased by yours truly. I truly believe school should be fun and safe for all students.
Part of what we teach in Life Skills is Rec and leisure, not just downtime and free time, but structured time learning how to take turns, choose an activity to do, and not just scrolling Youtube.
I like to have a variety of options and choose themed days so our students who are very routine-based can learn flexibility and choose other options. On Fun Fridays ,I do allow video games, and the hand-held retro video games and switch will give the kids a fun option that's affordable. Board games and card games are a great way to learn turn-taking skills and follow rules.
