Many of them are used to seeing gaming systems only as entertainment, so watching them connect gameplay to Computer Science concepts has been powerful. We've used Mario Kart mechanics to understand loops, variables, physics interactions, and event-driven programming. Students are now better able to visualize how code creates behavior, and this has made their own projects in class more confident and creative. In Robotics, we've used multiplayer cooperative play to strengthen communication and strategic planning—skills that directly translate to building and controlling robots.\r\nWhat excites the students most is the chance to learn through something familiar and fun. The Switch 2 has become a bridge between their outside interests and academic content, helping them feel more connected to the material. Several students who were previously hesitant to speak up or collaborate are jumping into teamwork activities and even leading discussions about game behavior and system design. In my 3D Design class, students have already begun sketching ideas for custom Switch accessories they plan to model and 3D-print, giving them real-world product design experience.\r\nOne of the most heartwarming changes has been seeing quieter students come out of their shell. A few students who typically struggle with engagement have completely lit up during our game-inspired lessons. They now participate more confidently, ask deeper questions, and take pride in applying their observations to coding or robotics problems. Your generosity didn't just give us new technology—it helped unlock new voices, new leaders, and new excitement for learning.\r\nThank you for making this possible. Your support truly changed the energy and opportunities in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1763669082042,"projectUrl":"project/leveling-up-learning-a-nintendo-switch-/9904945/","projectTitle":"Leveling-Up Learning: A Nintendo Switch-2 for STEM & Computer Science","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Giannandrea","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2799708_orig.jpg?crop=1936,1936,x0,y32&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708811020832","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/giannandrea"},{"teacherId":2799708,"projectId":9331747,"letterContent":"hanks to your generous support, our drone program has taken off—literally and figuratively! The new charging hubs, high-capacity USB-C chargers, and extra flight batteries have allowed us to maximize our flying time during class. Before this project, we constantly had to pause lessons to recharge batteries or wait for equipment to become available. Now, students can fly back-to-back missions, test their piloting skills, and collect aerial footage without interruption. The fast-charging stations are powering multiple batteries at once, and the rugged cases are keeping everything organized, safe, and portable for both classroom use and off-campus demonstrations.\r\nOne of the most exciting additions has been the USB power meters and cable testers. These tools have opened the door for meaningful lessons about circuits, energy efficiency, and diagnostics. Students love seeing the live voltage and current readings while charging the drone batteries, and we've had great conversations about why different devices charge at different rates. A few students have even started using the testers to compare their personal phone cables or USB devices—proof that they're transferring these technical skills into everyday life.\r\nThere's one student in particular—Luis—who had never flown a drone before this year. Since we received the new accessories, he's been the first to volunteer to set up the charging hubs and run battery checks. He now sees himself pursuing a future in electronics or aviation technology. Your support made that transformation possible. Instead of simply reading about circuits and sensors, students now get to wire, code, and test real robot systems. \r\nCurrently, students are working in teams to tackle each of the first Hack Pack build. They're learning not only engineering and programming skills, but also collaboration, persistence, and creative thinking. Because of your support, our students now have access to a wide variety of fidgets that are making a real difference in their daily school experience. These tools are available in our wellness and counseling space, and students are encouraged to choose a fidget that works best for them—whether it's to ease test anxiety, stay grounded during emotional moments, or simply help with focus throughout the day. One powerful moment was during a particularly stressful week of exams: a student who often struggles with anxiety came in, found a fidget that worked for her, and said, \"I didn't think something this small could make me feel this calm.\" That kind of impact is priceless.\r\n\r\nWhen we first introduced the materials, students were so excited and curious. Many immediately recognized how these tools could help them self-regulate, and some even asked to take one to keep in their backpack or use at home. The positive buzz quickly spread around campus, and it's been amazing to see students not only using the items but also talking more openly about mental health and self-care. We're currently integrating the use of these fidgets into our NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) awareness efforts on campus and plan to offer student-led mindfulness activities next. Students can now spend more time flying and less time troubleshooting, knowing that the equipment is secure and ready to use. This has made our STEM lessons more efficient, engaging, and aligned with real-world practices in drone operation and fieldwork.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting addition for students has been the extra batteries and protective gear. With longer flight time and added safety, students have been able to experiment more freely—whether they're practicing coordinated flight patterns, filming short aerial videos, or troubleshooting flight issues. One student, in particular, who initially lacked confidence in technical subjects, has become a go-to leader during drone flight activities. His enthusiasm has grown alongside his skills, and he's now considering pursuing a career in drone technology or engineering.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than fund supplies—it has helped inspire the next generation of innovators. As part of our Mars Rover outreach project, my high school students have taken the lead in reading, discussing, and sharing this novel with younger students in our community. Not only has this enhanced their own reading comprehension and discussion skills, but it has also given them the opportunity to model leadership and empathy as they introduce elementary and middle school students to both robotics and reading.\r\n\r\nThe novel itself offers a beautiful combination of STEM concepts and emotional depth. Through class discussions and small group reading sessions, my students explored themes like perseverance, identity, and resilience—all while gaining insight into the real-world technology behind space exploration. For many, this was their first time reading a book that brought together their technical interests and personal growth. Even students who typically shy away from novels were pulled in by the voice of Res, the Mars rover narrator, and the way the story mirrors their own hands-on engineering experiences.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most inspiring impact has been watching our students share A Rover's Story with younger kids during school visits. They didn't just demonstrate the Mars Rover they built—they sat side-by-side with future learners, reading aloud, answering questions, and passing on copies of the book like a gift. One of my students, who once struggled with public speaking, told me, \"I felt proud handing that book to a fifth grader. I used to be that kid, and now I'm the one inspiring them.\" Your support made this moment possible. Students have been using it to conduct flight path experiments, practice data collection, and even explore how variables like altitude and speed affect performance. This kind of hands-on experience not only deepens their understanding but makes learning exciting and relevant.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been mastering the drone's advanced features, like obstacle sensing and precision control. They're captivated by how professional and high-tech the drone feels, and they're proud to operate it successfully after practicing. Many have started asking questions about careers in drone technology, aerospace, and robotics—showing how this project is inspiring new possibilities for their futures.\r\n\r\nOne student, who typically shies away from group work and has struggled to stay engaged, has really found his stride with this project.
