Imagine coming into school every day unable to speak to your peers or communicate with your teachers, needing to follow the same routine throughout the entire day and having so much to share with the world, but being trapped in your body. That is what some of my students experience every day, living with Autism and Down Syndrome. Others are dealing with mental health and mood disorders that are keeping my students from being able to be fully educated in their classrooms. Anger, self-harming and physical aggression fill our days. But despite all of this, they find ways to laugh and smile every day; to be part of a smaller classroom community that loves one another and will come together to create a safe and happy learning environment from one another.
My Project
To see the joy on the faces of special needs students when they are learning and having fun is priceless. Even though their verbal skills are limited, and they need one on one support throughout the school day, it doesn't keep them from being eager to learn and explore.
This project will support special education students bring school to life!
Life skills for significant needs students is essential starting at a young age. Dramatic play and opportunities to interact with peers through imagination is exactly what my students need to start their love for learning in an non-traditional way!!!
