"When are we ever going to use this?" This is a question I encounter frequently as an educator. I want to help my students understand that what we learn in our science class has a place in "real life".
My students belong to a Title I school system in a high poverty area in Tennessee.
I teach science to all of our sixth grade children regular education and special needs. My students love science and are very inquisitive as well. They are the epitome of tactile learners! It is my goal to teach my students that what you learn, you will use again. I want to show them how our science curriculum is useful in daily life.
My Project
I need alligator clips and light bulbs for my students to practice building series and parallel circuits. The circuit building labs I have requested will allow my students to build circuits that power buzzers, door bells, and fans. I am also requesting a potato clock and emergency flashlight to represent alternative forms of energy and energy transformations. I need preserved specimens for my students to categorize into producers, consumers, scavengers, and decomposers. We can also use them to build food chains and categorize the different types of consumers based on adaptations. My last request is for hands-on materials for space. We need visual depictions of moon phases and a model to illustrate days, months, years, solar eclipse, and lunar eclipse.
Please, help me give my students the education they deserve.
I want to show my students what they are learning is useful, applicable, and important. I believe if students know what they are learning has merit, they will be more involved.
