This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I want to encourage my students to read for just plain fun! Reading is an essential skill and passion for our children to encompass and providing students with books that pertain to their interests will hook them into reading.
My students in the past have all been wonderful kids that do not yet realize what the world has to offer them.
My students are from a small town and many do not have books at home or are unable to checkout from the school library due to not being able to pay the fee. I want to create this library for them in my classroom, so they have this opportunity to read, expand vocabulary, increase reading level, and engage in reading with the world around them.
My Project
My students will be able to READ. I am going into my third year teaching and I keep adding to my library each year, little by little. My students deserve a plethora of books with a variety of topics, levels, and genres. My students will be able to have book clubs, engage with each other about their books, and recommend books to one another to create a reading environment.
I work in a school where the achievement gap is seen clearly.
The achievement gap is a literacy gap. Students' reading levels increase when they read independently every day for long periods of time. Author James Patterson said it best, "The best way to get kids reading more is to give them books they'll gobble up -- and that will make them ask for another..."
