Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Covid has changed our lives not only at home, but at school. I no longer have my students coming to the library in the mornings before the school day begins. Still, in spite of the restrictions imposed in schools now, our students still stay in touch with their librarian. My film club from last year is still a possibility because the students requested it.
We have a film club at school.
How is that possible with the physical restrictions that exist? Simple. We communicate by Zoom and Google Classroom. My film club is meeting and we are learning to create stories on video using technology. I'll admit that this isn't easy, but the students have cameras on their phones and other technology. There are apps out there for editing and creating videos. My kids are quick learners and want to create.
My Project
For the past four years, I've been fortunate to have worked with film professionals after school to teach students how to make films, public service announcements and short films. These professionals would come to my school and work with my film club. It has been an enjoyable experience and much has been learned by the students as well as the librarian (me).
This year, with COVID preventing so many activities at school, my students requested the film club again.
How was I going to accomplish this with so many restrictions? We have a club. We meet on Zoom and maintain communication through a Google Classroom that I created. Somehow we are working on it. Our focus this semester is "Life with Covid".
I am working alone this time. I have no support from the film professionals that brought their equipment and experience. We have no physical meetings. I'd like to attend this training to learn more on how manage my club. My students would like to learn as well. This training would benefit not only me, but my students.
