Life Is a Spectrum: Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth Through Biology

I need to present a session on gender-inclusive biology at HRC Time to Thrive, the premier national conference for professionals serving LGBTQ+ youth.

My Students

I teach in a large, diverse public high school where some students struggle with getting lost in the crowd. In my classroom, students always embrace it when I provide deliberate opportunities to practice empathy and inclusion. They are curious about how science can help humans to understand our differences and to right injustices.

I work with many LGBTQ+ students, some who are out, and some who are not.

LGBTQ+ youth are in every classroom in every school, but often they have not come out yet. In my school and nationwide, these youth are far more likely to experience harassment and miss school for safety and health reasons (GLSEN, 2017).

My Project

The Time to Thrive conference is hosted by the HRC - the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization in the country and sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA).

Time to Thrive is a golden opportunity for me to develop my curriculum alongside other knowledgeable and passionate champions for LGBTQ+ youth.

I have been invited to give a presentation on my area of expertise, which is a gender-inclusive biology curriculum. There is a deep need for more conversations about inclusion in science classrooms, and I hope to elevate that conversation to a national level. As a presenter and an attendee at this event, I will establish key connections, grow this work, and uplift students in my school and others across the nation.
