My students need materials to support our upcoming study of Living Things. Specifically, we are asking for science materials related to Life Cycles. We are requesting books, manipulatives, and a worm viewer for live worms!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The wonderful thing about our preschool classroom is that every moment of every day students are engaged in hands-on active learning experiences. Children enjoy playing with and exploring new materials and I am constantly striving to expose them to new learning experiences. My students are intelligent, energetic and full of wonder. They have an insatiable curiosity about the world around them. Our school falls into the Title 1 category with 90% of students in our school eligible for free and reduced-price lunch. Due to limited funds, I am looking to provide high quality resources and experiences for my students at little to no cost.
My Project
Recently, my students have been curious about living things. They have been asking questions about plants and animals and how they grow and change. We would like to obtain materials so they can effectively study and understand the life cycles of plants and animals. Through this DonorsChoose project, we have requested 3D models, books, math manipulatives and worm viewer. When we begin a new study, we ask the students what they already know about a topic and what they would like to learn. We then provide students with materials and provocations that allow them to seek the answers for themselves. These materials will support us in answering the questions and extending their thinking. We have already obtained a grant to have fertilized chicken eggs and an incubator in our classroom for four weeks during April and May. Additionally, we will be getting ladybug and butterfly larvae in order to observe the growth and change of those insects. These materials will support the conceptual understanding related to the life cycles of chickens, plants, butterflies and ladybugs.
