Life Choices for Home Learning

Help me give my students Scholastic Choices student magazines for home instruction. Choices magazine gives students the life skills they need to stay healthy, safe, and in control.

My Students

I've learned a lot about our students this week including the fact that one of my classes has no internet for 25 percent of my students. Another one of my classes that number increases to 33 percent without internet. Add in the students for whom internet means a hotspot or their cell phone as a hotspot, and I'm literally speechless. Why can't rural students have access to reliable, affordable internet at fast enough speeds to do their homework? So, I'm faced with a harsh reality that video-based lessons, and e-books are not working for many of my students who are trying to learn from home. As a result, they need books at home. Our buses are dropping off food and learning supplies Monday through Friday to meet the needs of all of our students.

My Project

In making the shift to home-based learning due to COVID-19, I learned that about 33 percent of my student have either no or insufficient internet to support online learning. So, I need resources that are easy to send home yet support all learners. Scholastic student magazines fit that bill perfectly. I don't have to send home a giant literature textbook that students struggle to read on good days. Instead, we can focus on trying our hardest with smaller, more meaningful lessons.

Although our District is officially closed, we run food and supply buses to our students Monday - Friday to meet the needs of any of our kids.

So, any books, magazines, or supplies can be delivered during the week. We do doorstop drop off and don't ask for any return materials to maintain safety and cleanliness.
