Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Traveling changes you. It broadens your perspective, makes you more open-minded, and fosters personal growth. I've always told my students that what they're learning doesn't matter unless they can apply it to the real world. This is an amazing opportunity for them to do that.

We are a high poverty school, as 73% of our students qualify for the federal free meal program.

However, we are also a highly effective school. In fact, just last springnation, U.S. News and World Report published its list of the nation’s best high schools for 2014. This list ranked us as the #41 high school in the United States, the top high school in the Bay Area, and the fourth best high school in the state of California. This tremendous success is a testament to the hard work of the amazing students with whom I am so fortunate to work. Despite the many obstacles that they face, they are tremendously dedicated to their education, their future, and their community. The particular students who are going on this trip are some of the most dedicated leaders I've ever been around. They came to me and told me that they wanted to do some sort of global service trip, and they were the driving force behind the planning.

My Project

This trip is an amazing opportunity for my students, many of whom have never been on an airplane or out of state. In addition to the hands-on learning experience to enhance what they’It learned in history class, this trip will help them grow by pushing them out of their comfort zone and giving them a more global perspective that will hopefully have a profound impact on their perception of the world. It’s also a chance for them to do service. There is a growing amount of literature linking the performance of community service and other generous acts with positive physical and psychological outcomes including an increased sense of empowerment and agency. I want my students to return from Peru not only enriched culturally, but also with an increased belief in their ability to enact positive changes in their own community. They will participate in nightly reflection exercises and a "call to action" on the final night to reflect on how they can use the experience when they return home.

This is a life-changing trip.

Not only will my students be walking the trails of the Incas, but they will also have the chance to meet many residents of the Sacred Valley and learn about their customs. They will see ancient Incan rituals carried out. They will spend time with a women's weaving cooperative. They will do community service and meet many of the children living in the community. All of this will give them an incredibly new perspective on the world and on their own lives.
