Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Biology in an underperforming urban school in Massachusetts. In any single classroom there may be as many as 13 ethnicities represented as well as a range of ability levels. All of my students are capable of succeeding in Biology if provided the opportunities and support they deserve. Unfortunately, those opportunities and supports are often lacking.
Getting my students engaged in the learning of concepts such as photosynthesis and DNA replication is not always an easy task. I have found that providing students with a notebook in which they can keep notes - but also color, cut and paste images, and decorate - allows them to create a unique record of their coursework while expressing their own sense of creativity. The imposed organization (pages must be numbered, table of contents maintained) does wonders for most students and they themselves are impressed with the quantity and quality of work that emerges throughout the year. The finished notebook serves as a study guide for state exams and many students are so proud of their work that they take their finished notebooks home to keep at the end of the year (this might not sound like a big deal, but it is).
In order to create these wonderful notebooks I must provide my students with a supply of colored pencils (and a way to keep them sharp), scissors and gluesticks (you'd be amazed how fast they go)!
I have tried personally to keep up with the demand for supplies, but a teacher's salary can only go so far. Please consider a donation to help my students continue their active and creative participation in their biology education. Last year's group outperformed similar groups on the state biology exam. Help me provide my current students with the materials they need to create collection of work they can be proud of.
