Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in level 1 ESL classes. They come from very diverse backgrounds. The majority of my students speak either Spanish or Portuguese and come from South America. However, I also have students from Asian countries.

Our school may have the greatest ethnic diversity of all schools in the state, largely due to our ELL population.

It is also the largest high school in the state. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students often do not have access to precious resources on the internet at home or at school. Without readily accessible technology, ELLs are spared many opportunities to truly engage with new content.

Like all kids, ELLs learn the most when they are actively engaged. It is not uncommon to have a student absent due to either a suspension or from the lack of interest in being at school. This is evidence that they are disengaged. These students need a better reason to be in the classroom than grades alone. They need to become a part of a system that will prepare them for the technologically dependent and ever-changing "real world.

My Project

My students were ecstatic when they found out that total strangers had funded a project that would put 9 new chromebooks in our classroom. They are ready to connect to our school server and use the chromebooks to access classroom activities and games that I post to our google classroom page. Unfortunately, we have discovered a small glitch in our plan. The chromebooks will not work very well in our school if they are connected to open wifi.

Google Chrome OS management licenses are necessary on all of the 9 new devices so that our school technology experts can better assist our classroom and connect our devices to the school network.

Connecting to the school network means that only students with school email addresses can use our chromebooks, which speeds up the chromebook performance and makes them more secure. Ultimately, our tech staff can not support our devices if they aren't officially school network computers.

My students and I are so close to accomplishing our goal of creating a fully functional chromebook station. As stated in my previous project, my English Language Learners (ELLs) need more access to computers at school. Computer skills are essential for success and in our school and in our modern society. Unfortunately, most of my students are reliant on smartphones for any access to the internet. They crave opportunities to simply type, do research and create projects on chromebooks and I am eager to provide them with continuous access to reliable technology in my classroom.
