Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 4-6 graders in my classroom LOVE to read! The students in my classroom have just come to the United States from various Latin American countries and from very diverse backgrounds. Our school is located in one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the United States. More than 90% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The students in our class are embarking on their journey to be biliterate in Spanish and English.

One of the things they crave are books they can access and enjoy. The backgrounds and experiences each child brings vary and allow us to learn so much from each other each day. Something they all have in common is their excitement to learn. Learning about yesterday. Learning about today. Learning about tomorrow.

My Project

These materials will be used for learning in school and at home. The students in my classroom are newcomers who can read in Spanish but our current library is filled with books in English. Books in English are so much easier to buy because of the low cost and availability. My students are running out of options in our library for books they can access.

The fiction books will be for use during independent reading at home or in school.

Students are allowed to take books home as often as they want-which they love! The scholastic news subscription will be used for instruction and then they can use it as home as well. I want my students to have access to high quality material in their native language.
