I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are a Title I school and we serve many socioeconomically disadvantaged youth. The primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity while simultaneously closing the achievement gap.
I teach Spanish to students who range from novice to advanced proficiency-all of my students are language learners on their way to becoming fully balanced bilinguals.
My students are all born to be readers, but some of them just haven't found that perfect book in Spanish yet.
My Project
My classroom library has been steadily growing this year, but we still have a shortage of high-interest, Spanish-language novels for my intermediate and advanced bilingual students. Some of these books are direct student requests and some are books that I enjoyed as I was learning Spanish.
I would love for my students to have the benefit of a well-stocked classroom library so that they can be successful when searching for a book that will enchant them.
Reading is one of the most powerful activities in which a young language learner can engage. It is my mission to provide all of my students with the opportunity to discover the book that will get them hooked and turn them into life-long readers.
