Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th Grade English Language Arts students are wonderful. They are kind, thoughtful, and for the most part, love to read. They are mostly from Queens. My school is a Title I School.
Over the last three years, I have built up a strong in-class library to ensure that every student has access to a wide variety of books.
I've hit up multiple library sales and do Scholastic orders each month, but it is difficult to get those high demand new releases without paying out of pocket and, of course, those are the books that will most attract my students to reading!
My Project
Students read when they have books that are new and diverse. The bulk of the books I have requested are ones my students have asked for, and diverse books that I know will be of interest to my diverse class of readers.
For example, with upcoming films, I know my students will be interested in "The Hate U Give" and "Darkest Minds." Considering the demographic of my school, I know books like "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" and "Dear Martin" will appeal to them.
Having the ability to add new, and diverse books to my library keeps my classroom fresh and inviting.
