Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love hands-on activities in which they can collaborate and problem solve. They come into the library excited and eager to learn. Last school year, I introduced coding in our library lessons. Needless to say, they were hooked!

My students were beyond excited and picked up the basic coding skills with ease.

You could see the light bulbs turn on! It was amazing to see. As a middle school librarian, I see over 900 students. It can be a challenge to find new and exciting Maker Space activities. This year, I hope to continue with the coding lessons.

My Project

Libraries are a place for sparking wonder, searching for information, and exploring new ideas. Gone are the days where school libraries are only used to check-in and out books. Today, many libraries contain a MakerSpace area where the students are able to explore and build STEAM projects. I plan to incorporate STEAM standards into my library lessons. One way of doing this is to teach my students coding. Coding helps develop the students’ language and express their creativity.

The donations will help my students code robots.

My students will use iPads to program robots to move and dance. They will need to learn how to move these robots in various directions by playing with the code feature. Next, we can build an obstacle course and maneuver the robots.
