Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Head Start Program, located in Elizabeth NJ. I have 15 students in my class. Each one is a pleasure to teach and learn from. A majority of the children come from low-income backgrounds. For many of the students coming to school is their only chance to play with toys and socialize with others their age. Our objective in the classroom is to provide and support both to the children and their families.
Perhaps you have experienced this moment.
The children are seated on the carpet in a semicircle. The group of children are quiet and waiting to hear every word of our story. Some of the children in the circle try to scooch closer to see the pictures better and soon the circle becomes smaller and smaller. As they listen to the words of the story the anticipation builds and their eyes glaze over trying to hear the ending. Each book gives the children an experience or feeling they may not have had the opportunity to explore before. Many of the books in our classroom are tattered and ripped because they have been .
My Project
Our classroom library is many of our students' first exposure to books. Therefore it is vital for us to create an inviting and diverse library area.We chose a variety of books for all the students to experience different stories, thoughts and ideas. The library area allows the students to create a love for reading.
Notably, at a pre-K level, children will explore pictures, learn new vocabulary words and follow words along as they turn the pages of the book.
Children will pick up the same book multiple times, excited to look over the pictures again and again. The best way to continue the students' love for reading is by introducing more books into our library.
