My Project
I tell my students that it's hard to enjoy reading until you've found the "right book." This is especially true for my reluctant readers who have yet to find the right book. I hope to make my classroom library more representative of my students so that they can see themselves and their friends in a story and feel "seen" in a book in a way they might not feel seen in real life.
At least 20% of Gen Z students identify as queer, but only about 5% of the books in my class library have queer protagonists. I can do better. To prepare for Pride month - and all year - I want to make my class library more queer-friendly.
All of the books in this project feature LGBTQ+ characters. Some are classic authors (Baldwin and Woolf), and some are more current (Lo and Reyes). It includes comedies, coming-of-age novels, graphic novels, comedies, and memoirs. A few books include queer identity as a central theme; for others, it's a side note. No matter what, I hope these books work as mirrors and windows for my students.
