Leveling Up Our Ukuleles

My Students

I teach kindergarten through sixth grade music in a 100% poverty school in the city of Cincinnati. My students are about 90% African American, with a rising Nepalese and Hispanic refugee population.

Since I am the music teacher, I work with all 600-700 students in our building.

Our district does its best at providing us with resources, but with over 70 schools in our district, in a very high needs population, it is difficult for them to provide everything we need.

My Project

For five years I have taught the ukulele to all 600+ of my students, grades Kindergarten through Sixth and they are now ready to level up! Throughout this time I have also organized an after school ukulele club and had many students become very successful players. Unfortunately, some of my older students who are now on their 5th year of learning the instrument are ready for more of a challenge and we need some more resources in order to make that possible.

The tuners will help me teach my students the responsibility of tuning their own instruments (a necessary skill for higher level playing) and the instrument cases will allow us to safely transport our instruments for traveling gigs when it is safer to do so.
