Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Did you know that 66% of America's 4th graders do not read at a proficient level? Similarly, according to the same report from the National Center for Education Statistics, 64% of the nation's 4th graders do not demonstrate proficiency or above level in math. By 8th grade, both of those daunting statistics rise to 69% in reading and 73% in math. A recent survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of LEGO Education shows that hands-on learning is at the forefront of parents' minds after 80% of parents stated that their children in K-12 schools either dislike school or are bored. This data, and what I hear from my students and observe too, drive my intention in this project.

Kids thrive on engagement - they love for learning to be fun (and honestly, teachers do too)!

My approach to academic intervention is to rely on data to inform instruction and evidence-based strategies, while also including the engagement students crave. Engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus and motivates them to engage in higher-level critical thinking. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given manipulatives to engage in learning. They are eager to join intervention groups and typically make better behavioral choices, as well as get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk with worksheets.

In addition to literacy and math tools & resources, I included a few flexible seating choices in this project. Giving students choice supports students' self-regulation and self-management skills, which have been associated with cognitive engagement and the ability to develop a deeper understanding of academic content.

I have seen how choice & engagement can positively affect our students' attitudes toward learning and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
