A close friend of mine uses the slogan, "Leveling the Playing Field," as a reminder to provide for underprivileged children the same opportunities and resources as more privileged children in an effort to award them the same educational opportunities.
Year after year, my students go with damaged materials, worn down pencils, and a minimal of technology exposure.
Considering we are a Title I school, many of the children come from high poverty homes, and look to school as their safe place. They are smart, hard working children who deserve nothing but a fair chance and an equal opportunity to be challenged. They don't have the resources at home, and I would like to provide resources that will help them be successful at school. My students are so grateful for what they have, which makes me as a teacher want to provide more for them, and expose them further than they ever thought their imagination could take them.
My Project
Research states that when children are able to listen to a book being read, as well as being read repeatedly, it helps them to become a fluent, as well as an independent reader. When students are working in literacy stations/centers, a small group will be able to go to the listening station to hear a book being read to them fluently. Students are to work on building comprehension, by using previously taught comprehension strategies to ask and answer questions, summarize, make connections, infer, and synthesize information. Background knowledge will also be built by exposing students to places and experiences around the world through stories they may have not been able to read on their own, but can enjoy as the story is being read to them while they follow along in their books. A listening station also builds reading confidence for struggling readers. As they continuously listen to a story, eventually they will be able to read it independently.
Donations for this request will make a difference in the lives of my students by exposing them to various text, building background knowledge, and increasing their reading fluency.
Students will be able to chose stories to listen to as a small group and have book discussions that will create a deeper understanding as well as building their comprehension.
