My Project

In our K–6 school library, I see firsthand how powerful the right book can be. For many of my students—especially those who are still developing confidence in their reading skills or learning English as a second language—traditional chapter books can feel overwhelming. At the same time, I have a large group of enthusiastic sports fans who are eager to read, if they can find books that truly connect with their interests. That’s where Jake Maddox graphic novels come in.

This project will allow me to add many new titles in our K-6 library to our Jake Maddox graphic novels set, which are extremely popular with all levels of readers.

These high-interest, visually engaging books combine fast-paced sports stories with accessible text and supportive illustrations. They are especially effective for reluctant readers and multilingual learners, offering a bridge between visual storytelling and stronger reading comprehension. Students who might otherwise avoid books are drawn in by the action, the relatable characters, and the familiar world of sports.

As a Title I school, many of our students have limited access to books at home. This makes our library an essential space for both academic growth and personal discovery.

These books will:

* Increase engagement for reluctant and struggling readers

* Encourage independent reading and confidence-building

* Reflect students’ interests, especially in sports like basketball, soccer, football, and more

When students see themselves and their interests reflected in books, they’re more likely to read. This project will help ensure that every student, regardless of reading level or language background, can find a book they’re excited to open.
