This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a class of 20 eager 1st grade students with many different abilities. My students are a very active bunch and are easily excitable. Each child unique and gifted in their own way. They all come from North Minneapolis dealing with many different obstacles in their everyday life outside of school. My school is 100 percent free and reduced lunch as well as having an extended school day and school year. Our goal as a school is to reduce the achievement gap within the African American community in North Minneapolis.
My Project
In our class we try and expose the students to as many different types of genres of books as possible! But with a limited budget our classroom library is limited to mostly fiction stories, most of which students cannot read independently. Our goal is that students feel confident grabbing any book and reading it independently.
With your help my goal is to add a variety of different leveled books to the library.
This will not only help students become better, more confident readers, it will also help instill a love of reading. We don't want to just teach children how to read, we want to teach them to become passionate about reading. With books, children can go anywhere in the world without leaving their desk! Help me expose these wonderful readers to all the adventures the words has to offer.
