Richard Allington, one of the foremost reading researchers, said, 'If I were required to select a single aspect of the instructional environment to change, my first choice would be creating a schedule that supported dramatically increased quantities of reading during the school day.'
My students attend a Title One school in Oklahoma.
They live in poverty and are surrounded by negative attitudes and influences. But, despite all their challenges, these nine-year-olds are powerful people, resilient, positive, and intelligent. They laugh and cry everyday, just like every child in this country, but they don't have the tools they need to succeed everyday. To paint a picture: my students don't have a classroom. We have held class in the teachers' lounge, the conference room, the library, and now a storage room with everything shoved to the back. We have experienced so many moves, adjustments, and changes. We have worked so hard to maintain a classroom culture, despite the lack of a classroom. We work to meet the standards and our exceptionally high goals, despite the lack of space (chairs, desks, etc.). We will always make it work, because these kids, and their education is not negotiable.
My students are attracted to graphic novels, I Spy books, and books written by and about their Disney Channel stars. While I am happy they are reading at all, the bar needs to be raised. They need to be exposed to true literature; they need to hear and see and experience real novels. In order for me, as their teacher, to bridge the gap between their current reading levels and higher level text I need to give them access to these books in every way possible. This listening center is a tool that will be used to encourage them to gather around literature - to hear stories read properly, to expose them to vocabulary. I read aloud to my class everyday, but I look forward to the ability to have a Learning Center, allowing double the exposure to these wonderful texts. First up: Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief!
To this day the library is my favorite place to be.
Being surrounded by books and knowledge and adventure is an amazing experience. Right now, my kids don't see that. They don't feel that passion, and I refuse to settle with this apathy. They MUST learn to read. They MUST love to read. Please help us get there. Thank you so much for your generosity.
