My students need sight word bingo games, soft seats, alphabet stamps and Leveled Readers in order to allow themselves the ability to pick "just right" books and to see themselves grow in their reading throughout the school year!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a beginning teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide a creative and safe environment for my students.
My students are eager, energetic learners with big emotions!
They like to move, read and love lots and LOTS of positive attention. Many of my students are not able to experience a "typical" home life due to their situations. From the minute they walk in, I focus on their potential and providing an environment that allows them to learn more than just what the curriculum tells me to teach. Many of my students are still learning how to handle their big emotions so we spend a lot of time learning coping strategies. I may not be able to control their home lives but I can certainly control their experience in our classroom. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic growth.
My Project
The primary grades are such a crucial age for students to develop not only fundamentals of reading but also a LOVE for reading! Research has proven time and time again that all students love reading as long as they are reading the right books! Having Leveled Readers in the classroom will allow students to choose books they can read at an independent level. I plan to have each student chart their growth using the leveled books so that they can visually see themselves becoming evolved readers!
In my 2018-2019 classroom, I will strive to cultivate a love of reading with my first graders!
At this age, students begin to make the jump from learning HOW to read, to learning FROM their reading!
The letter stamping kit will encourage students to practice their sight words daily in an exciting, hands-on manner! Throughout the day, students will have the ability to choose from flexible seating options while they are reading. This process will entail problem-solving skills and decision-making which is an important life skill! Whisper phones are a great way for students to truly hear how they are reading! Bingo games will create a fun and engaging way for students to practice sight words and also build on life skills such as being a good team player!
