Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Leveled Guided Reading books provide students with interesting books at their level for practice and instruction.

Most of my students are from low socio-economic families, being raised by parents working 2-3 minimum wage jobs, single mothers, or grandmothers.

Many families are living 2-3 families to an apartment or house because of the economic crises. 85% are English Learners, and/ or newcomers to the country, most did not attend preschool and are behind academically from one to two years.

My Project

3. My Elementary School is located in Northern California in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is comprised of 500 students from diverse backgrounds including African American, Latino, and Pacific Islanders, and others. My students are the lowest 10% of kindergarten, first, and second graders, ranging from age five to eight years old. My three groups of four to six students are comprised of nine girls and 6 boys. Their success in the small group setting continues to boost their academics as well as their confidence level, and with time they will transfer the skills and strategies that we use in small group into their own classrooms. I look forward to walking by each and every one of their rooms and seeing my students be active participants in their classrooms.

This project will allow me to deliver explicit small group instruction focusing on targeted instruction in reading, comprehension, and writing.

Students will be able to increase their phonics, word study skills, writing, fluency, comprehension, and develop their vocabulary. Students will learn various strategies to help them become productive and successful readers and writers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
