My students need a variety of leveled readers in order to practice the plethora of reading strategies that are taught in first grade.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am so excited to meet my new group of first graders on August 13, 2018! I don't know them yet, but I know that they will come to school on the first day with a smile, maybe a few tears after bidding their parents farewell, and eager to learn!

My students attend a beautiful school in the heart of their neighborhood, however, it is Title I, and most of my students come from low income families.

My students may face challenges that even some adults have yet to experience in their many years of life, and I want my classroom to be an oasis for them.

My Project

I have served as a Reading Interventionist and Reading Coach for the past 2 1/2 years. Due to district budget cuts, I am returning to the classroom, and essentially starting from scratch! I am in dire need of leveled reading books to provide my students a variety of books to choose from when practicing their reading strategies.

First grade students are expected to make huge strides in reading over the course of the year (coming in at Level C, and leaving at Level I or higher).

For this reason, I am requesting an assortment of high-interest leveled readers to foster my students' independent reading.
