I teach first grade in a diverse school district, where over 60 languages are spoken throughout. My students are inquisitive, hardworking, and motivated to do their best everyday.
The majority of these students come from an economically disadvantaged background, with over 75% receiving free or reduced lunch services.
My goal for my students is to lower the achievement gap that often comes with this specific demographic of students.
Many students in my classroom entered school as kindergartners, without ever attending preschool or other school-readiness programs. This means that they are already behind before they even enter school for the first time. With your help, we will have the resources that will help close the achievement gap for my students. As their teacher, it is integral for me to provide a safe and positive learning environment for every child in my class, and to help foster kind, curious, lifetime learners.
My Project
Throughout my first year teaching grade one last year, I was constantly amazed by the growth students achieved in reading! Although many students in our school face challenges such as poverty and lack of resources, the majority of them were able to read by the end of the school year. This is the stage where so much focus is put on blending words, vocabulary, and phonics strategies. However, one of the most powerful ways students achieved growth, was by independently reading books of high interest. My students need book boxes to check out books that they will grow to love, and that help foster confidence in literacy. With these boxes, each reader will have a special place for books they are excited to read for the week. Primary grade favorites include the “Henry and Mudge” series, “Froggy” books, and many more! The variety of books will add excitement to each week’s reading experience, and further develop their love for stories.
