My Project

Our class has a very unique and diverse group of students. One thing that I am very proud of is how well they include and accept each other, even with all of their differences. Even though they accept each other, I think it difficult to truly understand and appreciate the cultural backgrounds of their peers. At our school, we have a very large ESL population. While the majority of our students have a Latino background, we see students from all over the world in our halls.

This year, we have more newcomers than ever.

In the last couple of months, I have had two new students come to us from Honduras and Mexico. Several of the students in our class this year have made the long and difficult journey from their country to the United States. We have done several activities and lessons throughout the year to embrace and learn about their lifestyles.

The story, Between Us and Abuela, is about a family separated by the border. They long for a reunion together, but each side is unable to reach the other. While our students are not physically standing on a border, they are separated from their family, friends, and the life they once knew. In the story, the children create a kite so they can fly a message over to their grandmother on the other side. I would like to create kites with my students where they can fill them with pictures and messages that they want to share with their loved ones, whether they are across the border, across the state, or across the sky. I think it will be a powerful way for them to feel connected to those that they cannot be with right now, as well as see that they are not alone!
